About Me

I spent over 25 years supporting users of computers at the University of Manchester from the early days when computer users wrote their own programs up into the PC and Microsoft era. At the end of 1997 I retired but worked part time for the University for a couple of years providing me with an initial introduction into the world of the Web. Subsequently I had a brief two and a half year spell as Customer Services Manager for a company called TeleCity before retiring completely in September 2002 and taking up painting. Currently living in an old farmhouse (pictured right) on the moors above Todmorden. We also have a small house in Estepona on the Costa del Sol where I spend quite a bit of time and where I do most of my painting.

My Painting

I took up watercolour landscape painting when I retired. I am self-taught but have drawn from the excellent books by David Bellamy and the wealth of internet instructional material freely available, some of which can be accessed from the "Links" page on this site. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be as much material on oil techniques freely available.

My Family

My wife Pat is an ex-teacher and retired at around the same time as I did.

We have 4 children. The eldest, Benedict, works for the British Council in Tripoli. He is married to Valentyna with 2 children, Katya and Alexander. Alexander is a network engineer and works for Microsoft in Madrid. He is married to Noelia. Bridget works for the Crown Prosecution Service in Manchester and the youngest, Frances is currently studying at the Univerity of Bradford.

Other Hobbies and Interests

Our house and large garden in Todmorden takes up a lot of time when I am in the UK. I enjoy cooking and have a reasonable collection of recipe books which continues to grow and is augmented by my son Alex´s collection. I also try to find time to enjoy the odd pint of real ale with friends in the many good pubs in Manchester and when in Estepona I enjoy sampling the local vino.
